This month's article is a tribute to the late Grandmaster Chiu Wai. A martial artist with connections to some of the biggest names in kung fu cinema and history. Grandmaster Chiu Wai practiced Hung Gar Kung Fu taught to him by his parents. Grandmaster Chiu's martial arts lineage goes all the way back to the legendary Lam Sai Wing, and Wong Fei Hong. Grandmaster Chiu had many students all through his life and even passed down his martial arts to his children. His children continue to teach Hung Gar to this day. Although this resume is impressive on its own, Grandmaster Chiu was also the Martial Arts Instructor for the Shaw Brothers studio which was responsible for countless Kung Fu movies throughout the 70s. Grandmaster Chiu never let his age limit him, and he proved himself by entering the 2nd International Wushu Competition and winning 1st runner-up at the age of 54. This achievement is even more impressive when you take into account that the only person to place higher than Grandmaster Chiu was 20 years old. Grandmaster Chiu was a skilled teacher and everyone that met him came away better than before. His teaching style wasn't exactly gentle but it was incredibly effective. Grandmaster Chiu was an amazing martial artist and person that should serve as an inspiration to martial artists both in training and in day-to-day life.
