This month’s article is a tribute to a martial arts and film legend, Grandmaster Yu Hai. Yu Hai was a Master who appeared in The Shaolin Temple. A movie that first brought Wushu cinema to the U.S. and introduced wushu to the masses. The movie was a huge hit and it is still cited today by many great martial artists as a very impactful movie to them and those around them. Yu Hai was well known for his practice of traditional Mantis Kung Fu; his training methods were so traditional Yu Hai would often watch Mantids fight to better his own style. The authors of the article each had interactions with Yu Hai and they both tell of a larger-than-life and truly kind Grandmaster. Even as he aged he never lost his skill, being able to show off his incredible stances and strikes at a moment’s notice. Yu Hai was also a major supporter of modern Wushu, being very willing to share and improve the art by passing it along to his students, Yu Hai found a perfect balance of maintaining tradition while still improving and adapting for the future. Yu Hai worked closely with many notable martial artists including Jet Li. After his passing, Yu Hai was awarded the title of being one of the top three martial artists of his generation alongside two of his costars from The Shaolin Temple. Grandmaster Yu Hai was a truly incredible martial artist and a person that did an unimaginable amount of good to everyone around him.
