Hello AMAI Family!

In this blog series, we will post reminders of what the students worked on during the previous week. This gives you or your child ideas for how to practice at home between classes. If you need extra help on any movements or sections of the form, talk to your instructor about adding a Virtual Membership onto your current membership to unlock videos that break down every section of your form and every technique!

Last week was the first week of classes in 2022 and the 7th week of the quarter!

Lil' Dragons:  The Lil’ Dragons warmed up with animal walks. The tiger techniques that they focused on were Rest Stance and Inside Crescent Kick. Rest stances (unlike their name!) require balance and stability. Practice by crossing your legs, then bending both knees to sit into the stance. For the inside crescent kick, try to kick over something knee level, then waist level, then head level for an extra challenge! With belt testing coming up soon, remember to practice the Tiger form at home.

BASIC Program: Kids BASIC students warmed up with relay races. They also focused on sections 2 & 3 of the Basic Fighting Form. As you get more comfortable with the form, make sure to keep your eyes up, on their targets as you throw strikes. Also, with testing and stripe testing coming up soon, practice your endurance at home with 20 push ups, 30 crunches, and 10 frog leaps.

Teen and Adult BASIC students started working on section 3 of the Basic Fighting Form. Keeping the focus on kicks, they reviewed roundhouse and side thrust kicks. After each kick in section 3, return to your fighting stance quickly with no extra movements.

Kids BBC Program: Kids BBC students warmed up with section 3 and focused on the self defenses from the Nan Quan form. The techniques they focused on are Wheel Kicks and Hook Kicks. For wheel kicks, make sure to keep your leg straight whereas in the hook kick, your leg should extend like a side thrust kick and snap around to strike with the heel. Keep practicing endurance (push ups, crunches, frog leaps) and stances.

Adult/Teen BBC Program: This week, the Adult and Teen BBC students focused on section 4 of the Nan Quan form. They worked on foundation skills to warm up including stances and snap kicks. They also focused on self-defense from the form and one step. As test week approaches, keep practicing the form as well as stances and endurance.

Foundation Weapons: In Foundation Weapons class this week, students worked on some fun foundation skills. Staff Toss and kicking the staff from the floor. These techniques can take a lot of practice, so don't get frustrated if it takes a few tries! They also worked on clearing the room with the staff and shadowboxing. When practicing, try to incorporate different stances into your shadowboxing.

Advanced Weapons: In Advanced Weapons class this week, students warmed up with foundation skills: forward and reverse flowers, figure 8s, and double flowers. They also focused on shadowboxing and moving around while you throw techniques. When shadowboxing, try to keep your eyes up and on your targets.
