Hello AMAI Family!
In this blog series, we will post reminders of what the students worked on during the previous week. This gives you or your child ideas for how to practice at home between classes. If you need extra help on any movements or sections of the form, talk to your instructor about adding a Virtual Membership onto your current membership to unlock videos that break down every section of your form and every technique!
Last week was the fifth week of the Winter Quarter. Congrats to everyone who earned stripes last week!
Lil' Dragons: The Lil’ Dragons warmed up with Running in the Woods. The tiger techniques that they focused on were Double Tiger Claw and the Stranger Defense. The double tiger claw can be used to stop a moving target like a push with both tiger claws hitting at the same time. For the stranger defense, circle both hands out and down to escape from a double wrist grab.
BASIC Program: Kids BASIC students warmed up with partner drills. They also focused on section 3 of the Basic Fighting Form. with your roundhouse kick, focus on snapping the kick out and getting back to your fighting stance as quick as possible. For your side thrust kick, start with a low target, like the knees, then gradually raise the target as you get more comfortable with the kick.
Teen and Adult BASIC students started working on section 3 of the Basic Fighting Form. Keeping the focus on kicks, they reviewed roundhouse and side thrust kicks. After each kick in section 3, return to your fighting stance quickly with no extra movements.
Kids BBC Program: Kids BBC students warmed up with sections 1 & 2 and focused on section 3 of the Nan Quan form. With learning a new section, make sure to practice at home and pay extra attention to direction changes of each move. Kids BBC students also worked on their butterfly stance. The difference between a butterfly stance and taking a knee is that the side of your foot should rest on the ground instead of being on your toes.
Adult/Teen BBC Program: This week, the Adult and Teen BBC students warmed up with sections 1 & 2 of the Nan Quan form. They also did strengthening in the form of pushups, crunches, and squats. The started learning section 3 of the form and one step. For your one step, remember to get off the tracks as you block!
Foundation Weapons: In Foundation Weapons class this week, students worked on 6-star blocking, forward flowers, and reverse flowers. They learned section 3 of the form. Keep practicing section 3 at home over break!
Advanced Weapons: In Advanced Weapons class this week, students warmed up with shadowboxing and stance work. They also learned section 3 of the form. This week during your practice, focus on having strong stances and keep your movements with the sword smooth.
