Hello AMAI Family!

In this blog series, we will post reminders of what the students worked on during the previous week. This gives you or your child ideas for how to practice at home between classes. If you need extra help on any movements or sections of the form, talk to your instructor about adding a Virtual Membership onto your current membership to unlock videos that break down every section of your form and every technique!

Last week was the fourth week of the Winter Quarter. Everyone did well with the first Stripe Test of the quarter!

Lil' Dragons:  The Lil’ Dragons started class with a review of their Tiger form! The techniques they focused on were Hold Back the Wall and X Block & Rake. Holding back the wall should have the strongest bow stance to help keep you stable. Practice hitting with both tiger claws at the same time for the most effective strike. The X Block defends against someone grabbing in for your hair. Use both hands to strike up to their arms before they can grab your hair! To finish class, Lil' Dragons students performed their form on their own to be awarded with stripes. Great job!

BASIC Program: Kids BASIC students started Stripe Testing with a basic warm up of push ups, crunches, jumping jacks, and a horse stance. They reviewed each technique from section 1 of the Basic Fighting Form and then performed sections 1 & 2 to get their first black stripe. Keep practicing and working hard to get the bonus stripes at the next Stripe Test!

Teen and Adult BASIC students also reviewed Section 1 and 2 of the Basic Fighting form. The technique focus was Roundhouse Kicks and Side Thrust Kicks to prepare for section 3. For your rear-leg roundhouse kick, make sure to pivot your support foot twice for the best balance and most power in your kick.

Kids BBC Program: In Kids BBC this week, the students started class with a basic warmup of push ups, crunches, jumping jacks, and a horse stance. For Stripe Testing, they reviewed the techniques tiger claw, backfist, butterfly palms, and southern uppercut. To earn their first black stripe, students performed sections 1 & 2 of the Nan Quan form.

Adult/Teen BBC Program: This week, the Adult and Teen BBC students reviewed Sections 1 & 2 of the Nan Quan 4th Rotation form. They also focused on using kicks and blocking to keep an attacker at bay. lunge kicks, thrust kicks, and snap kicks can all be used to accomplish this. Adult students worked on stances and stance sparring, which can easily be practiced at home by holding each stance for 30 seconds.

Foundation Weapons: In Foundation Weapons class this week, students worked on blocking drills. The drills focused on putting the staff between you and the attack and counter striking. Foundation weapon students also continued to work on sections 1 & 2 of the form with the focus on performance.

Advanced Weapons: In Advanced Weapons class this week, students practiced foundation skills and stances. They also learned section 3 of the form. If you need help reviewing the new section, check out our YouTube channel: AMAI DEwushu and find the playlist: This Quarter's Forms.
