Hello AMAI Family! In this blog series, we will post reminders of what the students worked on during the previous week. This gives you or your child ideas for how to practice at home between classes. If you need extra help on any movements or sections of the form, talk to your instructor about adding a Virtual Membership onto your current membership to unlock videos that break down every section of your form and every technique! Last week was the second week of the Winter Quarter. We had a shortened week due to Thanksgiving and we hope you all had a great holiday! Lil' Dragons: The Lil’ Dragons continued learning their Tiger Style form. This week they focused on the techniques High Block Tiger Claw and Three Scratches. Imagine you’re swiping a bad guy’s strike out of the air with your High Block and then blast the bad guy into smithereens with your Tiger Claw! You can practice the same Partner Workouts at home with a family member or friend! Try to do 10 pushups facing your partner and give each other a high five in between each one. BASIC Program: Kids BASIC students started learning Section 2 of their Basic Fighting Form. They worked on their Hook Punch and Uppercut. Twist your body to give these strikes power! Teen and Adult BASIC students also worked on Section 2 of the Basic Fighting form. The focus was Hook Punch and Uppercut for them as well. Make sure you have a strong fighting stance to begin your techniques from so that you can get power from your stance as you twist to strike! Kids BBC Program: In Kids BBC this week, students continued practicing Section 1 of the Nan Quan 4th Rotation form. The focus was on reviewing Section 1 and some basic techniques; try to knock out 15 jab-cross combos in a row to get your basic techniques looking super sharp. Our Nan Quan technique focus was Butterfly Palms. Make sure you have one hand pointed up and one hand pointed slightly down and that your fingers are nice and straight--it should remind you of butterfly wings! Adult/Teen BBC Program: This week, the Adult and Teen BBC students continued learning Section 1 of the Nan Quan 4th Rotation form. This week students got to practice the self defense application from Section 1, which is taken from the last movement combo of the section. This application is a defense of an incoming left-hand jab: parry with the right hand, grab the attacker’s wrist with your left hand, then strike to the side of the knee with your inward thrust kick. Finally, strike with your right hand to just above the attacker’s elbow. Foundation Weapons: In Foundation Weapons class this week, students started learning section 2 of the 16-Step Staff Form. They began practicing 4-star blocking and continued working on Forward Flowers. At home, practice your Cloud Parries--you can practice these with our without a staff in your hand! Advanced Weapons: In Advanced Weapons class this week, students reviewed Section 1 and began working on Section 2 of the Sun and Moon Sword and Shield form. They learned foundational techniques such as the 4 basic blocks as well as advanced techniques like a wrap and reverse wrap. Keep reviewing Sections 1 and 2 at home and check out the form video on our YouTube channel!
