Hello AMAI Family!

In this blog series, we will post reminders of what the students worked on during the previous week. This gives you or your child ideas for how to practice at home between classes. If you need extra help on any movements or sections of the form, talk to your instructor about adding a Virtual Membership onto your current membership to unlock videos that break down every section of your form and every technique!

Last week was the 11th week of our Fall 2021 Quarter. THIS WEEK is Test Week! Good luck everyone!

Lil’ Dragons:  The Lil’ Dragons warmed up with Animal Walks this week, which is super fun to practice at home–try walking like a seal, crab, tiger, or alligator! For their form, Lil’ Dragons worked on Block Block Punch and Thunder Step. For Block Block Punch, defend against an invisible attacker with each arm, and then hit back with a super strong punch! For Thunder Step, try stomping as loud as you can when you practice this (as long as nobody in the house is asleep!) If you need help remembering the form to practice at home, check out our YouTube channel AMAI DEWUSHU and look for the playlist “This Quarter’s Forms.”

BASIC Program: Kids BASIC students practiced Section 3 of their Five Stances form. Repetition is key when you’re getting ready for testing–try to practice the whole form 3 times every day. Challenge yourself to hold a 30-second horse stance!

Teen and Adult BASIC students continued practicing their Five Stances Form. This week’s focus is stances; whether you’re preparing for testing or still learning the form, review your stances and work on keeping your balance.

Kids BBC Program: As test week gets closer, BBC students are reviewing and practicing the whole crane form. As you prepare for testing, don’t forget to review your techniques, including all of your Crane Style hand tools, Cat Tail, and Inside Crescent Kick. Challenge yourself to hold a 30 second horse stance every time you practice!

Adult/Teen BBC Program: This week, the Adult and Teen BBC students reviewed all 4 sections of the form. In addition, we are focusing on shadowboxing. With your shadowboxing, try to keep it style-specific and aim to make a 5-move combo each time you practice.

Foundation Weapons: In Foundation Weapons class this week, students practiced performing their forms. Try to get at least 3 repetitions in before your test date and challenge yourself to create a new shadowboxing combo each time you practice.

Advanced Weapons: In Advanced Weapons class this week, students reviewed sections 1 through 4 of the Yin Shao Staff Form. Performance of the form was the main focus again this week, with breathing and stances being paramount. Challenge yourself to make your stances low and strong each time you go through the form.
